Dear readers of The Aesthetics Filmclub,

I’m dropping by today to let you know that the club will be closing its doors until after the summer. Over the next few months, I’ll be focusing on other creative projects (which, as always, you can keep up with via my Instagram account) and I believe we all deserve to look away from our screens during the warmer months and head outside in search of a little vitamin D.

All the content will remain available as usual, so you’re welcome to catch up on anything you might have missed or revisit pieces you found particularly interesting. Here are a few of my personal favourites from recent months:

• Jean Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast: a surrealist masterpiece of classic cinema

• Embracing Artifice: the aesthetic and narrative keys to Wes Anderson’s cinema

Finally, I didn’t want to leave without sharing a little list of film-related reads to keep you company on those long, lazy afternoons by the pool. Some of these are brand-new releases that I haven’t yet had the chance to dive into, but they’ve certainly made it onto my own summer reading list.

• The Virgin Suicides, Sofia Coppola. Following the huge success of Sofia Coppola: Archives with Mack Books, the director has just published this photographic book with the same publisher, featuring never-before-seen images from the making of her debut film The Virgin Suicides. A true collector’s gem, commemorating the film’s 25th anniversary.

• Sonny Boy, Al Pacino. One of the greatest actors of his generation, and of cinema history in general, recently published his memoirs. Even if it only offers a glimpse behind the scenes of classics like The Godfather, Scarface or Heat, I’m certain it will be well worth the read. Personally, I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

• The Friday Afternoon Club, Griffin Dunne. Another recent release, this memoir by actor and director Griffin Dunne has been widely praised by critics and is a New York Times bestseller. The nephew of writer Joan Didion, Dunne paints a portrait of his fascinating family and some of the tragedies that shadowed them.

• Room to Dream, David Lynch. I’ve recommended this book before, but I can’t think of a more compelling or better-structured memoir than David Lynch’s. To counterbalance the filmmaker’s enthusiastic and scattered nature, Kristine McKenna acts as biographer, collecting testimonies and gathering information to provide a linear, coherent narrative of Lynch’s life, which he then complements by recounting his own memories of those same periods (which often bear little resemblance). A real treasure.

• Cinema Speculation, Quentin Tarantino. I believe I’ve recommended this one before too, but like the previous title, this book is a true gem. Tarantino reflects on his lifelong relationship with cinema, from his childhood onwards, and explores how and why certain films struck such a deep chord with him, ultimately shaping him into the revered director he is today. Few people speak about cinema with the authority of Tarantino, and this is undoubtedly a book from which to take notes.

Queridos lectores de The Aesthetics Filmclub,

hoy me paso por aquí para anunciaros que el club cerrará sus puertas hasta después del verano. Los próximos meses estaré centrada en otros proyectos creativos (que, como siempre, podéis seguir a través de mi cuenta de Instagram) y creo que todos nos merecemos apartar la vista de las pantallas durante los meses de calor y salir a buscar un poco de vitamina D.

Por último, no quiero marcharme sin dejaros por aquí un listado de lecturas cinéfilas para que os acompañen en las largas tardes de piscina. Algunas de ellas son publicaciones muy recientes que, aunque no he tenido la ocasión de disfrutar todavía, sin duda están en mi propia lista de lectura para este verano.

• The Virgin Suicides, Sofia Coppola. Siguiendo el éxito rotundo de su libro Sofia Coppola: Archives con Mack Books, la directora acaba de publicar, con la misma editorial, este libro fotográfico con imágenes inéditas del rodaje de su ópera prima Las Vírgenes Suicidas. Una joya de coleccionista con la que conmemora el 25 aniversario de la película.

• Sonny Boy, Al Pacino. Uno de los mejores actores de su generación, y uno de los grandes de la historia del cine, publicaba hacer poco sus memorias. Con que incluya algún entresijo de los rodajes de clásicos como El Padrino, Scarface o Heat, estoy segura de que merecerá la pena. Personalmente, estoy deseando leerlo.

• The Friday Afternoon Club, Griffin Dunne. También publicado recientemente, este libro de memorias del actor y director Griffin Dunne ha sido ampliamente alabado por la crítica y es un best seller del New York Times. El también sobrino de la escritora Joan Didion hace un retrato de su interesantísima familia y de algunas de las tragedias que la acompañaron.

• Espacio Para Soñar, David Lynch. Ya os he recomendado este libro anteriormente, pero no se me ocurren unas memorias más interesantes y mejor estructuradas que las de David Lynch. Para contrarrestar el carácter entusiasta y disperso del cineasta, Kristine McKenna actúa como biógrafa, recopilando testimonios y recabando información para ofrecer una narración lineal y coherente de la vida de Lynch, que luego él complementa narrando sus propios recuerdos de esos mismos periodos (y que a menudo no tienen nada que ver). Una verdadera joya.

• Meditaciones de Cine, Quentin Tarantino. Creo que también os lo he recomendado antes, pero al igual que el anterior, este libro es una auténtica joya. Tarantino habla de su acercamiento al cine desde su infancia, y de cómo y por qué determinadas películas lo impactaron hasta convertirlo en el venerado director en el que se ha convertido. Poca gente puede hablar de cine con mayor autoridad que Tarantino, y desde luego este es un ejemplar del que tomar apuntes.

Welcome to “spoilerless recommendations”. Now and then, I’ll recommend you a movie that I find essential to watch, but giving you as little information as I can, so I don’t spoil it for you, which means you’ll have to trust my judgement (which, as everyone else’s, sometimes is a good one and sometimes is not).

Tarantino has always been one of my favourite directors. I consider all of his films to be masterpieces, and I imagine this is because his profound knowledge of cinema history always shines through in his filmography.

Some time ago, I wrote a piece about his film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and the figure of the doppelgänger (which I recommend if you haven’t read it), through which you can get a sense of the depth of his work.

But today I bring you another of my favourites for this spoilerless recommendation (and I must admit it’s very difficult for me not to mention anything that might spoil it for you, because it’s a gem that lends itself to more than one conversation): Inglourious Basterds.

What?

In Nazi-occupied France during the Second World War, a group of American Jewish soldiers devise a plan to assassinate several Nazi leaders. Their plot happens to coincide with young Shoshanna Dreyfus’s personal plans for revenge against Colonel Hans Landa, one of their main targets.

Who?

Quentin Tarantino writes and directs one of the most brilliant scripts of his career, which premiered in 2009 with a first-rate cast.

An unforgettable Christoph Waltz plays the infamous Colonel Hans Landa, a role that earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, whilst Mélanie Laurent portrays young Shoshanna Dreyfus. Brad Pitt (in one of his most comedic performances), Eli Roth, Til Schweiger, and BJ Novak lead the American soldiers. Diane Kruger, Michael Fassbender, and Daniel Brühl complete the cast.

The film received 8 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Director. In the end, it took home one statuette for Best Supporting Actor for Christoph Waltz.

Why?

Because it has everything: it’s brilliant, violent, and wickedly entertaining. Because Hans Landa is one of Tarantino’s best-written characters and Christoph Waltz’s performance is simply unbeatable. Because it’s one of his most polished scripts. Because it showcases Brad Pitt in a comedic role that, until then, had been quite rare in his career. Because it marks the start of great collaborations in the director’s filmography (he’d work again with Waltz in Django Unchained and with Pitt in Once Upon a Time…). Because it excels in quite literally every aspect: direction, script, cinematography, editing, production design… And because it lets us see the Second World War through Tarantino’s eyes.

What more could one ask for?

Bienvenidos a “recomendaciones sin spoilers”. De vez en cuando, os recomendaré alguna película que considero imprescindible pero sólo os daré la mínima información posible para no desvelaros nada importante, así que tendréis que fiaros de mi criterio (que, como el de todo el mundo, a veces es bueno y a veces no).

Tarantino siempre ha sido uno de mis directores favoritos. Todas sus películas me parecen obras maestras, e imagino que se debe a que en su filmografía siempre trasluce su profundo conocimiento de la historia del cine.

Hace tiempo escribí un texto sobre su cinta Érase Una Vez en Hollywood y la figura del dopplegänger (que os recomiendo si no habéis leído), con el que podéis haceros una idea de la profundidad de su obra.

Pero hoy os traigo otra de mis favoritas para esta recomendación sin spoilers (y reconozco que se me hace muy difícil no comentar nada que os la pueda estropear, porque es una joya que da para más de una conversación): Malditos Bastardos.

¿Qué?

En la Francia ocupada de la II Guerra Mundial, un grupo de soldados judíos americanos urdirá un plan para asesinar a varios líderes nazis. El complot coincidirá con los planes personales de venganza de la joven Shoshanna Dreyfus contra el coronel Hans Landa, uno de los principales objetivos.

¿Quién?

Quentin Tarantino escribe y dirige uno de los guiones más brillantes de su carrera, y que estrenó en 2009 con un reparto de lujo.

Un inolvidable Christoph Waltz da vida al infame coronel Hans Landa, papel que le valió el Oscar a Mejor Actor de Reparto, mientras que Mélanie Laurent interpreta a la joven Shoshanna Dreyfus. Brad Pitt (en uno de sus registros más cómicos), Eli Roth, Til Schweiger y BJ Novak, lideran a los soldados americanos. Diane Krueger, Michael Fassbender, y Daniel Brühl completan el reparto.

La película se alzó con 8 nominaciones a los Oscar, incluyendo Mejor Película, Guión Original y Director. Finalmente, solo se alzó con una estatuilla en la categoría de Mejor Actor de Reparto para Christoph Waltz.

¿Por qué?

Porque lo tiene todo: es brillante, violenta y divertidísima. Porque Hans Landa es uno de los personajes mejor escritos de Tarantino y la interpretación de Christoph Waltz es insuperable. Porque es uno de sus guiones más redondos. Porque muestra a Brad Pitt en un registro cómico que hasta esa fecha era poco habitual en su carrera. Porque es el inicio de grandes colaboraciones en la filmografía del director (repetiría con Waltz en Django y con Pitt en Érase una vez…). Porque es excelente en, literalmente, todos los aspectos: dirección, guión, fotografía, montaje, diseño de producción… Por poder ver la II Guerra Mundial según Tarantino.

Hace unos meses analizábamos el maravilloso vestuario de Belle de Jour, de Luis Buñuel, y cómo los diseños que Yves Saint Laurent desarrolló para Catherine Deneuve contribuyeron a comunicar la evolución del personaje a lo largo de la cinta.

Si bien el caso de Belle de Jour me gusta especialmente, no es la única película que ha contado con diseñadores de las grandes casas de moda para vestir a sus actores. Hoy vamos a ver cinco ejemplos en los que grandes diseñadores vistieron a personajes legendarios de la gran pantalla. Cine y moda en estado puro.

Barbarella

Si hay una película que representa la estética Space Age y el estilo pop de los 60 es Barbarella, y como no podía ser de otro modo, debía vestirla el diseñador que había logrado convertir plástico y metal en tejidos válidos (y deseables) en la alta costura: Paco Rabanne.

El vestuario retrofuturista diseñado por Rabanne aúna todas las tendencias más vanguardistas de los 60, como siluetas mini, diseños que ensalzan la figura femenina, tejidos elásticos y transparencias. Todo ello con materiales que encajan a la perfección con la odisea espacial de Barbarella.

Si bien en su estreno se consideró que el vestuario únicamente servía al propósito de hipersexualizar el personaje de Jane Fonda, con el tiempo los diseños de Rabanne han logrado reivindicar su espacio en la historia del cine, como uno de los primeros ejemplos que fusionaría con éxito diseño de vestuario y alta costura, todo ello a ritmo de psicodelia espacial.

El Quinto Elemento

En términos de vestuario, El Quinto Elemento es a los 90 lo que Barbarella es a los 60: una odisea retrofuturista que dio la oportunidad de jugar con diseños imposibles y materiales inesperados.

Jean Paul Gaultier fue en este caso el encargado del vestuario, y realizaría alrededor de 1000 diseños para la película.

Gaultier heredaría de Rabanne el uso de materiales como plástico, vinilo y metal en sus diseños, y los elevaría a nuevas cotas con piezas como los uniformes de McDonalds, las azafatas, el look de leopardo que luce Chris Tucker o los psicodélicos petos de Milla Jovovich. Pero por encima de todos destaca el ya famosísimo traje blanco de Leelo ( el personaje de Jovovich) que parece estar hecho de vendajes, y que se ha convertido un auténtico icono.

El vestuario de El Quinto Elemento ha influido en numerosas ocasiones los diseños de casas como Balmain, Mugler, o Rick Owens, una nueva prueba de que cine y alta costura se retroalimentan en muchas ocasiones.

Desayuno con Diamantes

El vestuario de Desayuno con Diamantes es, sin lugar a dudas, uno de los más recordados e influyentes de la historia del cine, y estuvo a cargo, como no puede ser de otro modo, de Hubert de Givenchy, que llevó al siguiente nivel el Little Black Dress, convirtiéndolo en icono.

El diseñador francés utilizaría la cinta de Blake Edwards y la silueta de Audrey Hepburn para redefinir los estándares de elegancia por los que se regiría la moda en las décadas siguientes, y es que esa imagen de Holly Golightly vestida de etiqueta y comiendo un croissant con guantes de ópera y collar de perlas frente al escaparate de Tiffany’s está grabada a fuego en nuestras retinas como símbolo de la belleza.

El Año Pasado en Marienbad

Para este clásico de la Nouvelle Vague, Alain Resnais contó con Coco Chanel para diseñar el vestuario de Delphine Seyrig, que protagonizaba la cinta, y que hoy se puede visitar en el museo Victoria & Albert de Londres.

El Año Pasado en Marienbad, que ganó el León de Oro en el Festival de Venecia, se ha convertido en un clásico de culto por lo complejo de su estructura narrativa y por el ambiente onírico y simbólico que la inunda. Sin embargo, el trabajo de Chanel para vestir a Seyrig es mucho más terrenal. Los vestidos que diseñó, si bien aspiracionales para la mayoría, pretendían ser vestidos para el día a día de una mujer de la posición de la protagonista. Eso los convirtió precisamente en un icono, ya que han sido versionados y reinterpretados en nuevas colecciones de Chanel, e imitados por docenas de firmas que pretendían acercar ese glamour parisino a las calles.

Cisne Negro

El diseño de vestuario de Cisne Negro no estuvo exento de polémica. Para su thriller psicológico sobre el mundo del ballet, Darren Aronofsky encargó en vestuario a Amy Wescott (que figura como responsable del mismo a todos los efectos). Sin embargo, para los trajes de bailarina de Natalie Portman y el resto de la compañía, Aronofsky encargó los diseños a Rodarte, el duo de diseñadoras compuesto por Kate y Laura Mulleavy, y que construyeron más de 40 piezas para la cinta. ¿Cuál fue el problema? Los diseños más icónicos de la película son sin duda los vestidos de Rodarte, sin embargo el reconocimiento al diseño de vestuario de la misma (premios incluidos) fue siempre asociado a la encargada oficial del mismo (que al fin y al cabo se ocupó del resto de diseños de la cinta), Amy Wescott.

Polémicas aparte, hay que reconocer que los diseños de Rodarte contribuyeron a reforzar la atmósfera de la cinta como sólo un gran vestuario lo hace. Los diseños etéreos del cisne blanco contrastan con los looks agresivos del cisne negro, que combinan la estética del ballet con detalles del gótico y del punk, y que acentúan ese cambio de personalidad de Nina cuando interpreta ese papel.

Natalie Portman se llevó el Oscar y Rodarte pasó a la historia del cine. Polémica o no, salieron ganando.

El diseño de vestuario siempre contribuye a definir personajes y a contar una historia, pero cuando se involucra a auténticos artistas de otros campos puede hacer mucho más. Estos cinco ejemplos son una nueva prueba de cómo cine y alta costura son dos artes que se retroalimentan, y de cómo su unión trasciende barreras, creando auténticos iconos culturales que permanecen, durante décadas, en el imaginario popular.

A few months ago, we took a closer look at the marvellous costume design of Belle de Jour by Luis Buñuel, and how the designs Yves Saint Laurent created for Catherine Deneuve helped communicate the character’s evolution throughout the film.

While Belle de Jour holds a particularly special place for me, it’s far from the only film to have called upon designers from the great fashion houses to dress its actors. Today, we’re going to revisit five brilliant examples where legendary designers created the looks for equally legendary characters on the big screen. Pure cinema and fashion at their finest.

Barbarella

If there’s one film that embodies the Space Age aesthetic and the pop style of the 60s, it’s Barbarella. And naturally, it had to be dressed by the designer who had managed to turn plastic and metal into haute couture-worthy (and desirable) fabrics: Paco Rabanne.

Rabanne’s retro-futuristic costume designs for Barbarella brought together all the most cutting-edge trends of the 60s: from mini silhouettes and figure-enhancing designs to elasticated fabrics and sheer panels. All of it crafted from materials that perfectly matched Barbarella’s intergalactic odyssey.

Although at the time of its release the costumes were seen as little more than a way to hypersexualise Jane Fonda’s character, over time Rabanne’s designs have rightly claimed their place in cinema history as one of the earliest successful fusions of costume design and haute couture, all to the rhythm of psychedelic space pop.

The Fifth Element

In terms of costume design, The Fifth Element is to the 90s what Barbarella was to the 60s: a retro-futuristic odyssey that offered the chance to play with outlandish designs and unexpected materials.

This time it was Jean Paul Gaultier who took on the task, creating around 1,000 designs for the film. Gaultier inherited Rabanne’s taste for materials like plastic, vinyl and metal, elevating them to new heights with pieces such as the McDonald’s uniforms, the air stewardess costumes, Chris Tucker’s leopard print ensemble, and the psychedelic harnesses worn by Milla Jovovich. But towering above them all is the now-famous white outfit worn by Jovovich’s character Leeloo, a design resembling bandages, which has since become an icon in its own right.

The costumes of The Fifth Element have influenced countless collections by houses such as Balmain, Mugler and Rick Owens, yet more proof that cinema and high fashion constantly feed off one another.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

The costumes in Breakfast at Tiffany’s are, without a doubt, among the most celebrated and influential in cinema history, and were the work of none other than Hubert de Givenchy, who took the Little Black Dress to a whole new level and turned it into an icon.

The French designer used Blake Edwards’ film and Audrey Hepburn’s silhouette to redefine the standards of elegance that would guide fashion for decades to come. That image of Holly Golightly, dressed to the nines, nibbling a croissant, wearing opera gloves and a string of pearls while gazing into Tiffany’s window, is indelibly etched into our cultural memory as a symbol of beauty and style.

Last Year at Marienbad

For this Nouvelle Vague classic, Alain Resnais enlisted Coco Chanel to design the wardrobe for Delphine Seyrig, the film’s lead, costumes that can now be viewed at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum.

Last Year at Marienbad, which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, has become a cult classic, thanks to its complex narrative structure and the dreamlike, symbolic atmosphere that permeates every frame. Yet Chanel’s work in dressing Seyrig was surprisingly grounded. The dresses she created, while aspirational for most audiences, were meant to reflect the everyday wardrobe of a woman of the character’s social position.

And that, precisely, is what made them iconic. They’ve been revisited and reinterpreted in Chanel’s later collections, and imitated by dozens of labels seeking to bring that unmistakable Parisian glamour to the streets.

Black Swan

The costume design for Black Swan wasn’t without controversy. For his psychological thriller set in the world of ballet, Darren Aronofsky officially appointed Amy Westcott as costume designer. However, for the ballet costumes worn by Natalie Portman and the rest of the company, Aronofsky commissioned designs from Rodarte, the American duo formed by Kate and Laura Mulleavy, who created more than 40 pieces for the production.

The issue? The most iconic designs in the film are unquestionably those by Rodarte, yet official recognition (and awards) for the film’s costume design went to Westcott, who was responsible for the rest of the wardrobe.

Controversy aside, it must be acknowledged that Rodarte’s creations powerfully contributed to the film’s haunting atmosphere, as only truly great costume design can. The ethereal looks of the White Swan contrast with the fierce, punk- and gothic-inspired costumes of the Black Swan, visually marking Nina’s shifting identity as she inhabits the role.

Natalie Portman won the Oscar, and Rodarte secured their place in cinema history. Whether scandal or success, it was a win.

Costume design always plays a part in defining characters and telling stories, but when genuine artists from other disciplines get involved, it can achieve so much more. These five examples are further proof that cinema and haute couture are two art forms that nourish one another, and that when they meet, they transcend barriers to create genuine cultural icons that remain imprinted in the popular imagination for decades.

Bienvenidos a “recomendaciones sin spoilers”. ¿Qué harías si de pronto encontraras una puerta que conduce directamente al cerebro de John Malkovich? Por improbable que suene la propuesta, es la premisa tras la ópera prima de Spike Jonze, que resulta ser la recomendación sin spoilers de hoy: Cómo ser John Malkovich.

¿Qué?

Craig Schwartz es un marionetista callejero con mucho talento pero poco éxito inmerso en una crisis existencial. Mientras su vida y su matrimonio se vienen abajo, Craig consigue un empleo archivando documentos en la misteriosa planta 7,5 del edificio Mertin-Flemmer. Mientras explora la planta, Craig descubrirá una misteriosa puerta que conduce, directamente, al cerebro de John Malkovich.

¿Quién?

Spike Jonze dirige la película, estrenada en 1999 y con guión del siempre genial Charlie Kaufman (responsable de esa joya que es Olvídate de mí), cuando ambos se encontraban al inicio de su carrera en el cine. Cuando Kaufman terminó de escribir su guión intentó, sin éxito durante algún tiempo, encontrar fondos para producirlo. Finalmente, se lo envió a Francis Ford Coppola, que a su vez se lo hizo llegar a un joven director de videoclips que por entonces salía con su hija Sofia: Spike Jonze.

Pese a (comprensibles) reticencias iniciales, John Malkovich accedió a interpretarse a sí mismo en la cinta, sabiendo que quedaría asociado para siempre a estos dos cineastas emergentes para bien o para mal, ya que su nombre aparecía en el título. Por suerte el proyecto fue un éxito.

John Cusack y Cameron Díaz interpretan al marionetista Craig y a su esposa Lotte, respectivamente. Catherine Keener, Ned Bellamy, Orson Bean y Octavia Spencer completan, ente otros, el reparto.

La cinta fue nominada a tres Oscar: Mejor Actriz de Reparto para Catherine Keener, Mejor Guión Original para Kaufman y Mejor Director para Spike Jonze. Una auténtica entrada triunfal en la industria para ambos.

Hay que mencionar también la banda sonora, en la que participó la cantante y compositora islandesa Björk.

¿Por qué?

¿En serio? Un hombre encuentra una puerta en un edificio de oficinas que conduce al cerebro de John Malkovich. ¿De verdad no es esa razón suficiente para verla?

Supongo que en ese caso podríamos decir que porque vale la pena presenciar la combinación de élite que suponen los genios de Kaufman y Jonze en una misma película, algo que repetirían muy pronto con Adaptation, de nuevo con gran éxito. También podríamos decir que porque merece la pena ver el salto a la gran pantalla de Kaufman y Jonze, con una cinta que anticipa muy bien el estilo poco convencional que más adelante caracterizaría las carreras de ambos. O porque el reparto realiza unas interpretaciones fantásticas, en muchos casos alejándose muchísimo de sus registros habituales. O simplemente porque nunca habréis visto una historia parecida, además contada a través de un guión brillante.

Pero todas estas razones deberían sobrar desde el momento en que las palabras “una puerta que conduce al cerebro de John Malkovich” han entrado en juego. No sé qué más queréis.

What would you do if you suddenly stumbled upon a door that leads directly into John Malkovich’s brain?

As improbable as it sounds, that’s precisely the premise behind Spike Jonze’s directorial debut, and today’s spoilerless recommendation: Being John Malkovich.

What?

Craig Schwartz is a highly talented but unsuccessful street puppeteer, caught in the midst of an existential crisis. As his life and marriage begin to fall apart, Craig lands a job filing documents on the mysterious 7½th floor of the Mertin-Flemmer building. While exploring the floor, Craig discovers a peculiar door that leads, quite literally, into the brain of John Malkovich.

Who?

The film, released in 1999, was directed by Spike Jonze and written by the ever-brilliant Charlie Kaufman (the mind behind the gem Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), both of whom were at the start of their cinematic careers. When Kaufman finished the script, he struggled for a while to secure funding, until he eventually sent it to Francis Ford Coppola, who passed it on to a young music video director who happened to be dating his daughter Sofia: none other than Spike Jonze.

Despite understandable initial hesitations, John Malkovich agreed to play himself in the film, fully aware that his name would be forever linked to these two emerging filmmakers, for better or worse, given it appeared in the title. Fortunately, the project turned out to be a success.

John Cusack and Cameron Diaz star as puppeteer Craig and his wife Lotte, respectively. Catherine Keener, Ned Bellamy, Orson Bean, and Octavia Spencer, among others, round out the cast.

The film received three Academy Award nominations: Best Supporting Actress for Catherine Keener, Best Original Screenplay for Kaufman, and Best Director for Spike Jonze, a genuine grand entrance into the industry for both of them.

It’s also worth mentioning the soundtrack, which included a contribution from Icelandic singer-songwriter Björk.

Why?

Seriously? A man finds a door in an office building that leads directly into John Malkovich’s brain. Surely that alone is reason enough to watch it.

But if you need more convincing, perhaps it’s because it’s worth witnessing the elite pairing of Kaufman and Jonze in a single film, a partnership they’d soon repeat with Adaptation, again to great success. Or because it’s fascinating to see both filmmakers make their leap to the big screen with a film that already hints at the unconventional style that would later define their careers. Or maybe because the cast deliver fantastic performances, many of them completely different from their usual roles. Or, quite simply, because you’ll have never seen a story quite like this one, told through such a sharp and brilliant screenplay.

But honestly, none of these reasons should be necessary the moment the words “a door that leads into John Malkovich’s brain” are mentioned. What more could you possibly want?

Bienvenidos a “recomendaciones sin spoilers”. De vez en cuando, os recomendaré alguna película que considero imprescindible pero sólo os daré la mínima información posible para no desvelaros nada importante, así que tendréis que fiaros de mi criterio (que, como el de todo el mundo, a veces es bueno y a veces no).

Nunca he visto una película de Billy Wilder que sea algo menos que absolutamente magistral. Mi favorita de entre su obra, Perdición, fue una de las primeras recomendaciones sin spoilers que aparecieron aquí, y ya es hora de seguir recomendando su legado con otra auténtica obra maestra: El Crepúsculo de los Dioses (Sunset Boulevard).

¿Qué?

Mientras huye de sus acreedores, Joe Gillis, un joven guionista en horas bajas, busca refugio en una vieja mansión de Los Angeles. La propietaria no es otra que Norma Desmond, gran estrella del cine mudo cuya carrera se vino abajo con la llegada del sonoro. Norma decide contratar a Joe para que arregle el guión escrito por ella misma para relanzar su carrera pero, durante el proceso, desarrollarán una retorcida relación, digna del mejor guión de Hollywood.

¿Quién?

Billy Wilder dirige esta obra maestra con guión co-escrito por él mismo junto a Charles Brackett y DM Marshman Jr. La cinta, estrenada en 1950, es una producción de Paramount Pictures.

Una inolvidable Gloria Swanson da vida a la diva Norma Desmond, con la que compartía el mismo bagaje de gran estrella del cine mudo. William Holden le da la réplica en el papel del joven guionista Joe Gillis. Nancy Olson y Erich Von Stroheim, completan, entre otros, el reparto.

Tratándose de una historia ambientada en el mundo del cine cuya trama se desarrolla en buena parte en los estudios de la Paramount, la cinta dio lugar a multitud de cameos, como Cecil B DeMille, Hedda Hopper y Buster Keaton, entre otros, interpretándose a sí mismos.

La película obtuvo tres Oscars, a Mejor Guión Original, Mejor Banda Sonora (para Franz Waxman) y Mejor Dirección artística, y acumuló un total de once nominaciones que incluían todas las categorías principales: Mejor Película, Director, Fotografía, y actores nominados en las cuatro categorías interpretativas (Gloria Swanson, Willian Holden, Nancy Olson y Erich Von Stroheim).

¿Por qué?

Porque es una verdadera obra maestra, y razón suficiente para que cualquiera se enamore del cine. Porque incluye una proeza técnica para la época nada más empezar la película, como es el plano desde la piscina (no puedo desvelar más sin incurrir en spoilers). Porque ilustra una época delicada en Hollywood, como es el paso del cine mudo al sonoro y las consecuencias para los intérpretes, una época que hemos visto después retratada muchas veces en films como Cantando Bajo la Lluvia, Babylon o The Artist, siempre con puntos de vista distintos. Porque las interpretaciones son inolvidables, especialmente Gloria Swanson como Norma Desmond. Y por encima de todo, porque nadie debería tener que convenceros nunca para ver una película de Billy Wilder, uno de las mayores genios que ha dado la historia del cine.

I have never seen a Billy Wilder film that is anything less than absolutely masterful. My favourite among his works, Double Indemnity, was one of the first spoilerless recommendations to appear here, and it’s about time to continue championing his legacy with another genuine masterpiece: Sunset Boulevard.

What?

While fleeing from his creditors, Joe Gillis, a down-on-his-luck young screenwriter, seeks refuge in an old mansion in Los Angeles. Its owner is none other than Norma Desmond, a great star of the silent film era whose career collapsed with the advent of the talkies. Norma decides to hire Joe to rework a screenplay she has written herself in a bid to revive her career but, in the process, they develop a twisted relationship, worthy of the finest Hollywood script.

Who?

Billy Wilder directs this masterpiece from a screenplay co-written by himself, Charles Brackett and D.M. Marshman Jr. The film, released in 1950, is a Paramount Pictures production.

An unforgettable Gloria Swanson brings the diva Norma Desmond to life, a character with whom she shared the same background as a major star of the silent screen. William Holden stars opposite her as the young screenwriter Joe Gillis. Nancy Olson and Erich von Stroheim, among others, round out the cast.

Given that the story is set in the world of cinema and much of the plot unfolds within the Paramount studios themselves, the film features numerous cameos, including Cecil B. DeMille, Hedda Hopper and Buster Keaton, all playing themselves.

The film won three Academy Awards: Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score (for Franz Waxman) and Best Art Direction, and amassed a total of eleven nominations, including all the major categories: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, and acting nominations in all four performance categories (Gloria Swanson, William Holden, Nancy Olson and Erich von Stroheim).

Because it captures a pivotal moment in Hollywood history: the transition from silent films to talkies and its consequences for performers, an era that’s been depicted many times since in films like Singin’ in the Rain, Babylon or The Artist, always with different perspectives. Because the performances are unforgettable, especially Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond. And above all, because no one should ever have to convince you to watch a Billy Wilder film, one of the greatest geniuses in the history of cinema.

On 19 May, we marked the 84th anniversary of Nora Ephron’s birth (she passed away on 26 June 2012), and to commemorate the life of one of the most significant writers and screenwriters of the 20th century, today we’re taking a look back at her filmography.

Nora Ephron began her career as a journalist and essayist (a role she never entirely abandoned), where she quickly stood out for her sharp observations and witty sense of humour.

In 1978, she published her first collection of essays, Crazy Salad: Some Things About Women, and in 1984 she released the autobiographical novel Heartburn, based on her divorce from journalist Carl Bernstein (one of the two Washington Post reporters who uncovered the Watergate scandal). The novel would later be adapted into a film.

Her first foray into the film industry came in 1983, when she co-wrote the screenplay for Silkwood with Alice Arlen. Directed by Mike Nichols and starring Meryl Streep, the film, based on real events, tells the story of Karen Silkwood, a nuclear plant worker who exposed the irregularities taking place at the facility.

The film was well received and earned Ephron her first Oscar nomination as a screenwriter, the first of three she would accumulate throughout her career.

In 1986, she wrote the screenplay for Heartburn, adapting her aforementioned novel. Once again directed by Mike Nichols, the film starred Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson as the ill-fated married couple in this acerbic take on personal relationships.

However, her greatest success, and what is widely considered her most significant contribution to film history, came in 1989 with the screenplay for When Harry Met Sally….

Directed by Rob Reiner and starring Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal, the film explores the relationship between Harry and Sally over the years, posing the question that has echoed across cinema screens for decades: can a man and a woman ever really be just friends?

The film brilliantly dissects human relationships, friendship, love and gender roles, with sharp insight and superb doses of humour. It became the romantic comedy par excellence. The screenplay was nominated for an Oscar and, although it didn’t win, it remains one of the finest scripts in cinema history, setting a standard that all subsequent rom-coms have aspired to meet.

Following the huge success of When Harry Met Sally…, Nora Ephron chose to stay within the realm of romantic comedy, writing and directing two more genre classics: Sleepless in Seattle (1993) and You’ve Got Mail (1998), both starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. The first earned her a third Oscar nomination as a screenwriter.

While neither quite matched the perfection of When Harry Met Sally…, both remain excellent romantic comedies in which Ephron consolidated her distinctive screenwriting style: sharp, quick-witted dialogue, intelligent humour, flawed yet endearing characters, and an optimistic view of relationships.

Although both films are firmly established within the pantheon of romantic comedies, it is You’ve Got Mail, inspired by Ernst Lubitsch’s classic The Shop Around the Corner (the name given to the protagonist’s bookshop), with its portrayal of evolving relationships in the early days of the internet, that has arguably built up the most devoted following over the years.

Between those two films, she wrote and directed Mixed Nuts, a Christmas comedy starring Steve Martin, and Michael, with John Travolta as an angel sent to Earth to complete a series of missions. However, neither film was particularly well received by critics or audiences.

The rest of her cinematic ventures fell short of the heights she had previously achieved. She wrote (but did not direct) the comedy Hanging Up, starring Diane Keaton and her regular collaborator Meg Ryan, and directed (but did not write) Lucky Numbers, with John Travolta and Lisa Kudrow.

Her final two films were both written, produced and directed by Ephron herself. In 2005, she released Bewitched, a remake of the popular 1960s television series of the same name, starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell, which received a rather lukewarm reception.

In 2009, she released her last (and far more successful) film, Julie & Julia, which intertwined the stories of legendary chef Julia Child, played by Meryl Streep, and Julie Powell (portrayed by Amy Adams), a journalist who sets herself the challenge of cooking every recipe from Child’s first book.

In 2006 and 2010 respectively, she published two collections of essays: I Feel Bad About My Neck and I Remember Nothing, both brilliant examples of the wit and unique humour that permeated her work across all formats, and which serve as the perfect introduction to her world.

I once heard someone say that Nora Ephron was the person you’d most want sitting next to you at a dinner party. And she absolutely was. Throughout her career, she proved herself to be an exceptional storyteller (perhaps because she was also an exceptional observer), and in her work as a screenwriter, she gave us a multitude of characters and scenes that have become genuine icons of popular culture.

Her female characters, complex and authentic, and her deep yet playful insight into human relationships made her not just a cultural icon herself, but a lasting influence on everyone who, like her, seeks to capture the ordinary and not-so-ordinary moments of life with pen in hand.

El pasado 19 de mayo marcó el 84 aniversario del nacimiento de Nora Ephron (que falleció el 26 de junio de 2012), y para conmemorar la existencia de una de las escritoras y guionistas más relevantes del siglo XX, hoy vamos a hacer un repaso por su filmografía.

Nora Ephron comenzó su carrera como periodista y ensayista (faceta que nunca abandonó del todo) donde rápidamente destacó por sus agudas observaciones y su sentido del humor.

En 1978 publico su primer libro de ensayos, Ensalada Loca: algunas cosas sobre las mujeres, y en 1984 publicó la novela autobiográfica Se Acabó el Pastel, basada en su divorcio con el periodista Carl Bernstein (uno de los dos periodistas del Washington Post en destapar el caso Watergate), que años más tarde se llevaría al cine.

Su primera incursión en la industria cinematográfica fue en 1989, cuando escribió junto a Alice Arlen el guión para la película Silkwood, dirigida por Mike Nichols y protagonizada por Meryl Streep. Basada en hechos reales, la película narra la historia de Karen Silkwood, una trabajadora de una planta nuclear que denuncia las irregularidades que ocurrían en la misma.

Tras el rotundo éxito de Cuando Harry Encontró a Sally, Nora Ephron decidió seguir vinculada un tiempo a la comedia romántica y escribió otros dos grandes clásicos del género, que esta vez dirigió ella misma: Sleepless in Seattle (1993) y Tienes un E-mail (1998), ambas protagonizadas por Tom Hanks y Meg Ryan (la primera le valió su tercera nominación al Oscar como guionista).

Si bien ninguna alcanzaba la perfección de su predecesora, ambas son excelentes comedias románticas en las que Ephron consolida su estilo como guionista: diálogos ágiles, inteligente sentido del humor, personajes imperfectos pero entrañables y una visión bastante positiva de las relaciones.

Si ambas cintas han entrado en el Olimpo de las comedias románticas, es Tienes un E-mail, inspirada por el clásico de Lubitsch The Shop Around the Corner (nombre que le da a la librería de la protagonista), con su retrato de la evolución de las relaciones en la era de internet la que acumula mayor legión de fieles seguidores.

Entre ambas cintas, escribió y dirigió Un Día de Locos, comedia navideña con Steve Martin; y Michael, protagonizada por John Travolta, en la que un ángel es enviado a la Tierra para cumplir una serie de misiones. Sin embargo, ninguna de ellas obtuvo una gran acogida de público y crítica.

El resto de sus incursiones en el mundo del cine fueron de menor calibre que los logros obtenidos hasta entonces. Escribió (no dirigió) la comedia Colgadas, con Diane Keaton y su habitual Meg Ryan y dirigió (no escribió) Combinación Ganadora, con John Travolta y Lisa Kudrow.

Sus últimas dos películas fueron escritas, producidas y dirigidas por ella misma. En 2005 estrena Embrujada, un remake de la popular serie de televisión de los sesenta del mismo nombre, y protagonizada por Nicole Kidman y Will Ferrell, que tuvo una acogida más bien tibia.

En 2009 estrena (con mucho más éxito) su última película Julie & Julia, en la que enlaza las historias de la legendaria cocinera Julia Child, interpretada por Meryl Streep, y la de Julie Bowen (a la que da vida Amy Adams), una periodista con el reto de cocinar todas las recetas del primer libro de la chef.

En 2006 y 2010 respectivamente, publica las compilaciones de ensayos No me gusta mi cuello y No me acuerdo de nada, dos brillantes muestras del ingenio y sentido del humor único que inundaban su obra en todos sus formatos, y que suponen el mejor acercamiento posible al universo de la autora.

Una vez escuché que Nora Ephron es esa persona que querrías tener sentada a tu lado en una cena. Es exactamente eso. A lo largo de toda su carrera ha demostrado ser una contadora de historias excepcional (quizás porque también era una observadora excepcional) y en su faceta como guionista nos ha regalado multitud de personajes y escenas que se han convertido en auténticos iconos de la cultura popular. Sus personajes femeninos, complejos y realistas, y su visión profunda y a la vez divertida de las relaciones humanas la han convertido a ella misma también en un icono cultural y en el referente de todos aquellos que, como ella, quieren registrar lo mundano y no tan mundano de la vida a golpe de pluma.

Bienvenidos a “recomendaciones sin spoilers”. De vez en cuando, os recomendaré alguna película que considero imprescindible pero sólo os daré la mínima información posible para no desvelaros nada importante, así que tendréis que fiaros de mi criterio (que, como el de todo el mundo, a veces es bueno y a veces no).

Para alejarnos por completo de ese aura melancólica e infantil del cine de Wes Anderson, del que hemos hablado en las últimas semanas, hoy os traigo una recomendación que no podría estar más lejos en cuanto a temática y tono. Eso sí, es sin lugar a dudas una de las mejores películas de finales de los 90 y una de las mejores de su director, David Fincher: se trata de El Club de la Lucha.

¿Qué?

Un joven, hastiado de su monótona vida como empleado de una aseguradora, comienza a padecer un grave cuadro de insomnio. Al no encontrar soluciones, comienza a acudir a grupos de apoyo donde descubre una nueva paz al tratar con enfermos terminales, que le ayuda a conciliar el sueño. Desde ahí su vida se verá inmersa en una increíble espiral de acontecimientos que cambiarán por completo su realidad.

¿Quién?

Estrenada en 1999, la película adapta la novela homónima de Chuck Palahniuk. David Fincher dirige la cinta, su tercer largometraje hasta la fecha, como encargo para la 20th Century Fox, que había comprado los derechos de adaptación del libro.

Edward Norton, Brad Pitt y Helena Bonham Carter protagonizan la película, acompañados por Jared Leto o Meat Loaf entre otros.

Dado que la primera regla del Club de la Lucha es no hablar del Club de la Lucha, es absolutamente imposible dar una sinopsis ajustada o describir esta película sin desvelar nada, pero sí puede decirse que es un magnífico retrato de la Generación X y de sus referentes culturales.

La cinta fue recibida con rechazo por el estudio, por considerarla demasiado violenta, tras un rodaje lleno de contratiempos. La crítica tuvo reacciones muy polarizadas ante la película tras su estreno en el Festival de Venecia, convirtiéndose en una de las películas más controvertidas de ese año, y no cumplió las expectativas en taquilla, pese a que la campaña de marketing se centró en reducir las pérdidas en lo posible.

Sin embargo, con los años la película se ha reivindicado como la gran obra que es, y el consenso entre crítica y público es más que positivo, siendo una de las obras más aclamadas del ya legendario director.

¿Por qué?

Porque, si de verdad no tenéis ni idea del argumento de la película, es una historia realmente sorprendente. Porque retrata muy bien la angustia de una generación. Porque, aunque el trío de actores principales hacen un trabajo magnífico, es Helena Bonham Carter quien ofrece una interpretación inolvidable. Porque la banda sonora es fantástica. Porque es una de esas pocas adaptaciones que están como mínimo a la altura del libro (en mi opinión, por encima). Porque el final es una de las escenas más icónicas de las últimas décadas, marcando a la perfección que los 90 han llegado a su fin. Porque es una auténtica joya del cine posmoderno.

To completely distance ourselves from that melancholic, childlike aura of Wes Anderson’s cinema, which we’ve been discussing in recent weeks, today I bring you a recommendation that couldn’t be further removed in terms of theme and tone. That said, it is undoubtedly one of the finest films of the late 90s and one of the very best from its director, David Fincher: Fight Club.

What?

A young man, weary of his monotonous life as an insurance company employee, begins to suffer from severe insomnia. Failing to find a cure, he starts attending support groups, where he discovers a strange sense of peace through connecting with terminally ill strangers, which helps him to finally sleep. From there, his life spirals into an incredible sequence of events that will completely reshape his reality.

Who?

Released in 1999, the film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Chuck Palahniuk. David Fincher directs the film, his third feature to date, commissioned by 20th Century Fox, who had acquired the rights to adapt the book.

Edward Norton, Brad Pitt and Helena Bonham Carter lead the cast, accompanied by Jared Leto, and Meat Loaf, among others.

Given that the first rule of Fight Club is you don’t talk about Fight Club, it’s absolutely impossible to offer a proper synopsis or describe the film without giving anything away, but what can be said is that it’s a brilliant portrait of Generation X and its cultural touchstones.

The film was met with rejection from the studio, who deemed it too violent, after a production plagued by difficulties. Critics had highly polarised reactions when it premiered at the Venice Film Festival, making it one of the most controversial releases of that year. It also underperformed at the box office, despite a marketing campaign designed to minimise losses as much as possible.

However, over the years the film has been rightfully reclaimed as the masterpiece it is, and the consensus among both critics and audiences today is overwhelmingly positive, cementing it as one of the most acclaimed works of its now-legendary director.

Why?

Because if you truly don’t know the plot, it’s a genuinely unexpected story. Because it perfectly captures the anxieties of a generation. Because, although the trio of lead actors deliver outstanding performances, it’s Helena Bonham Carter who gives an unforgettable turn. Because the soundtrack is fantastic. Because it’s one of those rare adaptations that is at least on par with the book (in my view, it surpasses it). Because the ending is one of the most iconic scenes of the past few decades, perfectly marking the end of the 90s. Because it’s a true gem of postmodern cinema.

Last week, we reviewed Wes Anderson’s film career on the occasion of his forthcoming release, The Phoenician Scheme. While we then anticipated his main authorial traits (meticulously crafted aesthetics, symmetry, colour palette, nostalgia, melancholy, a recurring cast…), today we are here to break down and better understand the key elements of his cinema, which we will group into three main categories: aesthetics, narrative, and constants.

Aesthetics

Aesthetics play a pivotal role in Wes Anderson’s films. So much so, in fact, that one of the most frequent criticisms levelled at him is that he often prioritises style over substance, with the aesthetics in question overshadowing the storytelling.

Part of this aesthetic stems from a highly calculated composition of shots, where symmetry prevails so consistently that it has become synonymous with his filmmaking. The use of overhead shots to introduce objects has become such a signature device that it has been endlessly imitated (particularly on social media).

Another of his defining aesthetic traits lies in his adherence to specific colour palettes, which may vary slightly from one film to the next but remain cohesive enough to bestow upon his body of work a chromatic coherence that few directors can claim.

Costume design, in many of his works entrusted to the magnificent Milena Canonero (also responsible for the costumes in Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette and Barry Lyndon, among others), also plays an active role in this aesthetic coherence. The characters in his films often appear dressed in what might be considered a uniform that sets them apart from others (in some cases, such as The Life Aquatic or The Grand Budapest Hotel, the uniform is literal), granting them not only a recognisable presence within the plot and his wider work, but also transforming them into instant icons, frequently reminiscent of those cartoon characters who, in their fantasy world, always wear the same clothes.

We cannot overlook, when describing Wes Anderson’s aesthetics, the part played by handcrafted animation and the use of models in his work. From his stop-motion films (Fantastic Mr Fox and Isle of Dogs) to smaller scenes incorporating these elements, such as the “tour” of the Belafonte in The Life Aquatic, Anderson uses these techniques to infuse his films with an extra dose of magic.

Lastly, it’s worth noting the importance of typography in his films. His title cards are so popular and distinctive that there are even apps promising to help you achieve the same look for your social media through fonts and filters.

It’s clear, then, that aesthetics carry significant weight within Wes Anderson’s filmography and, as we have already mentioned, they often outweigh the story itself. However, we wouldn’t be speaking of an auteur if there weren’t distinctive authorial traits at play, and isn’t every creator entitled, after all, to decide which elements should take precedence in their work? In Anderson’s case, it’s all about embracing artifice.

Narrative

We could say that nostalgia, eccentricity, and a romanticised view of childhood form the essence of his stories. Narratively, his films centre on melancholic plots led by misfit characters, sometimes geniuses, who either haven’t grown up or remain, in some way, tethered to childhood. Brilliant characters, yet utterly incapable of being happy.

This brilliance and loneliness that characterise his protagonists flood the narrative with two devices frequently used by the filmmaker: irony and an absurd, childlike sense of humour (in the best possible sense, once again contributing to that romanticised depiction of childhood). Furthermore, his films are virtually devoid of drama, not in terms of the events that take place, but rather in the way the characters react to them, paying little or no heed to children running away or suicide attempts. Everything is overcome with a sense of utmost naturalness. Much like a child would.

We should also mention a narrative device Anderson often employs: embedding one story within another, shaping the film like a kind of narrative Matryoshka doll, where an omniscient narrator suddenly digresses to tell us something about one of the characters. This further strengthens the impression that we are immersed in a fantastical fable brimming with surprises.

Constants

As we mentioned last week, Wes Anderson consistently surrounds himself with a regular team, collaborating with them film after film. For years, Adam Stockhausen has overseen production design, the aforementioned Milena Canonero handles the costumes, and his cast of actors appears time and time again. Owen Wilson, a university friend and collaborator (with whom he has also co-written several screenplays), and Bill Murray are the actors who have appeared most frequently in his films, though his roster of regular collaborators grows ever longer: Luke Wilson, Willem Dafoe, Tilda Swinton, Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman, Anjelica Huston, and Scarlett Johansson are just some of the names that make up his distinctive troupe.

The system works: with every new release, his films are filled with stars who serve as a draw for those who might not otherwise have ventured into the director’s work.

But these aren’t the only constants in Anderson’s cinema. His obsession with vintage-looking objects (maps, suitcases, letters, fictional newspapers…), recurring literary references to authors such as Stefan Zweig or Roald Dahl, and the habitual use of invented settings (like the Republic of Zubrowka) are regular features that, like all the elements mentioned above, help weave together the personal universe of the director.

Wes Anderson has crafted a rich, exquisite, cohesive, and self-contained world, one that many dream of being part of, and that invites the viewer to inhabit for a few hours, always leaving them wanting more. At a time when information overload and the excess of influence tend to homogenise the work of many, Anderson has managed to remain loyal to both his aesthetic and thematic concerns, expanding his universe without ever relinquishing that unalterable identity that makes him unique.

While it may be excessive for some, I believe it is always worth taking a stroll through those fantasy worlds, increasingly rare to find, and, if only for a couple of hours, reclaiming that infectious, childlike enthusiasm of Anderson’s for the marvellous artifice that is cinema.

La semana pasada repasábamos la trayectoria cinematográfica de Wes Anderson con motivo de su próximo estreno, The Phoenician Scheme. Si bien ya entonces anticipábamos sus principales rasgos de autoría (estética obsesivamente cuidada, simetría, paleta de color, nostalgia, melancolía, reparto recurrente…) hoy estamos aquí para desglosar y comprender mejor las principales claves de su cine, que agruparemos en tres categorías principales: estética, narrativa y constantes.

Estética

La estética juega un papel clave en las películas de Wes Anderson, hasta el punto de que una de las mayores críticas a las que suele enfrentarse es a la de que a menudo pone la forma por encima del fondo, y esa estética de la que hablamos eclipsa la narración.

Parte de esta estética se debe a una composición de planos muy calculada, con predominio de la simetría, tan constante en su obra que se ha convertido en sinónimo de su cine. El uso de planos cenitales para introducir objetos se ha vuelto tan característico de sus películas que ha sido imitado hasta la extenuación (especialmente en redes sociales).

Otra de sus principales claves estéticas es el adherirse a determinadas paletas de color, que varían ligeramente ente obras pero que resultan lo bastante cohesivas como para conferir a su obra una coherencia cromática de la que pocos directores pueden presumir.

El diseño de vestuario, en muchas de sus obras a cargo de la magnífica Milena Canonero (también responsable del vestuario de la Maria Antonieta de Sofia Coppola o Barry Lyndon ente otras), también contribuye activamente a esta coherencia estética. Los personajes de sus películas parecen vestir un uniforme que los diferencia del resto (en ocasiones, como The Life Aquatic o El Gran Hotel Budapest, el uniforme es literal), dándoles no solo un aspecto reconocible dentro de la trama y de su obra, sino que los convierte automáticamente en iconos, que a menudo recuerdan a esos personajes de dibujos animados que, en su mundo de fantasía, visten siempre del mismo modo.

No podemos olvidar, a la hora de describir la estética de Wes Anderson, el papel de la animación artesanal y el uso de maquetas en su obra. Desde sus cintas en stop-motion (Fantastic Mr Fox e Isla de Perros), a pequeñas escenas en las que introduce estos elementos, como el “tour” por el Belafonte en The Life Aquatic, Anderson utiliza estos recursos para introducir un poco más de magia, si cabe, en sus obras.

Por último, hay que mencionar la importancia de la tipografía en sus películas. Sus rótulos son tan populares y reconocibles que incluso existen aplicaciones que prometen ayudarte a conseguir esa misma estética en redes sociales a través de tipografías y filtros.

Vemos por tanto que la estética tiene un peso importantísimo dentro de la filmografía de Wes Anderson y, como ya mencionábamos, a menudo pesa sobre la historia. Sin embargo, no estaríamos hablando de un autor si no hubiese rasgos de autoría y, ¿no está a caso en su derecho, cualquier autor, de elegir qué elementos priman sobre otros en su obra? En el caso de Anderson, lo primordial es abrazar el artificio.

Narrativa

Podríamos decir que nostalgia, excentricidad y romantización de la infancia son las claves de sus historias. A nivel narrativo, en su cine priman las tramas melancólicas, protagonizadas por personajes inadaptados, a veces genios, que o bien no han madurado o siguen de algún modo anclados a la infancia. Personajes brillantes pero absolutamente incapaces de ser felices.

Esta brillantez y esta soledad que caracteriza a sus personajes hace que la trama se inunde de dos recursos muy utilizados por el cineasta: la ironía y el sentido del humor absurdo (infantil en el mejor de los sentidos, de nuevo contribuyendo a esa romantización de la infancia). Además, sus cintas carecen de drama, no en cuanto a los sucesos que acontecen sino a las reacciones de los personajes, dando poca o ninguna importancia a niños que se fugan o a intentos de suicidio. Todo se supera con la mayor naturalidad. Como haría un niño.

Hay que mencionar también un recurso narrativo muy utilizado por Anderson en sus películas, que es introducir un relato dentro de otro, configurando la obra como una suerte de Matrioska narrativa en la que un narrador omnisciente hace de pronto un inciso para contarnos algo sobre alguno de los personajes. Se refuerza así la sensación de que estamos viviendo en una fábula fantástica cargada de sorpresas.

Constantes

Como ya mencionábamos la semana pasada, Wes Anderson trabaja siempre rodeado de un equipo estable, con los que repite proyecto tras proyecto. Desde hace años, Adam Stockhausen se encarga del diseño de producción, la citada Milena Canonero se encarga del vestuario, y el reparto de sus obras repite una y otra vez. Owen Wilson, amigo y colaborador desde la universidad (con el que ha firmado además varios guiones) y Bill Murray son los actores que han aparecido más veces en sus obras, pero su lista de colaboradores habituales es cada vez más extensa: Luke Wilson, Willen Dafoe, Tilda Swinton, Adrien Brody, Jason Swartzman, Anjelica Houston o Scarlett Johansson son sólo algunos de los nombres que componen su particular troupe.

El sistema funciona, estreno tras estreno se llena de estrellas que funcionan como reclamo para aquellos que quizás no se hubieran acercado de otro modo a la obra del director.

Pero no son las únicas constantes del cine de Anderson. La obsesión por los objetos de estética vintage (mapas, maletas, cartas, periódicos inventados…), las constantes referencias literarias a escritores como Stefan Zweig o Roald Dahl, o el uso habitual de lugares inventados (como la República de Zubrowka) son elementos habituales que, como todo lo anterior, contribuyen a dar coherencia al universo personal del director.

Wes Anderson ha configurado un universo rico, precioso, coherente y cerrado, del que muchos se mueren por formar parte y que invita al espectador a habitar durante unas horas, siempre dejando ganas de más. En un momento en el que el exceso de información y de influencia tiende a homogeneizar las obras de muchos, Wes Anderson ha sabido mantenerse fiel a su estética y a sus temas, y ha seguido ampliando su universo sin renunciar a esa identidad inalterable que lo hace único.

Si bien resulta excesivo para muchos, creo que siempre merece la pena dar un paseo por esos mundos de fantasía cada vez más difíciles de encontrar y recuperar, aunque solo sea por un par de horas, ese entusiasmo infantil y contagioso de Anderson por el maravilloso artificio que es el cine.

Nostalgia, melancholy, symmetry and pastel colours. It takes just a few minutes within any of Wes Anderson’s works to notice these elements, which have made the director one of the most recognisable figures in contemporary cinema. To mark the release of his latest film, The Phoenician Scheme, at the end of this month, we’ll take a look back at his career (today) and analyse the hallmarks of his filmmaking (next week).

With 11 feature films (12, if we count the one about to premiere) and numerous short films under his belt, Wes Anderson provokes highly polarised reactions: few viewers remain indifferent to his work, as he has gathered legions of both admirers and detractors. What’s undeniable is that he is one of the most significant working directors today, and it’s well worth keeping up with his projects.

Wesley Wales Anderson was born on 1st May 1969 in Houston, Texas, where he grew up with his two brothers. From a very young age, he showed an ever-growing interest in cinema and theatre, recording Super 8 films in which he involved his friends and siblings. Nostalgia for this period of his life is a constant presence in his work, where we frequently witness a romanticisation of childhood universes.

Anderson studied Philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin, where he met one of the key figures in his career: Owen Wilson. They forged a friendship that endures to this day, as well as one of the longest-standing creative partnerships in contemporary cinema, since Wilson has appeared in nearly all of the director’s projects.

The pair co-wrote and filmed the short film Bottle Rocket, which they managed to screen at the 1993 Sundance Film Festival. There they met the legendary director and producer James L. Brooks (whom many will know from The Simpsons), who provided the funding to turn the short into a feature-length film. With a script penned by both, directed by Anderson and starring Owen and Luke Wilson (another frequent collaborator), it would mark the feature film debut for them all, and the beginning of a career filled with successes.

Following Bottle Rocket came Rushmore, which would spark one of Anderson’s most prolific collaborations, as the film stars Bill Murray, who has since appeared in nearly all of the director’s projects. Jason Schwartzman, with whom Anderson would also collaborate repeatedly, made his debut here (we begin to see one of Anderson’s authorial signatures: surrounding himself with a stable creative team). Rushmore tells the story of a friendship between a teenager and a man much older than him, already presenting the key traits the director would refine throughout his filmography (which we’ll analyse next week): symmetrical shot compositions, a highly distinctive colour palette (dominated by pastel tones), melancholic characters, outsiders (but of a kind quite unlike those seen, for example, in Tim Burton’s work), and a nostalgic atmosphere.

In 2001, his first major success arrived with The Royal Tenenbaums, where Anderson began to refine his distinctive cinematic identity. The cast was packed with stars, including regulars Bill Murray, Owen and Luke Wilson, alongside new faces for his filmography like Gene Hackman, Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow and Anjelica Huston (who would reappear in his subsequent projects). The screenplay, chronicling the misfortunes of a dysfunctional family of geniuses, earned Anderson and Owen Wilson their first Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay and became a reference point for an entire generation of film lovers.

His next work, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, was a tribute to Jacques Cousteau. Co-written with Noah Baumbach and starring his regular collaborators (Bill Murray, Anjelica Huston, Owen Wilson) alongside new additions (such as Willem Dafoe), the film failed to find an audience upon its release. However, it further refined Anderson’s aesthetic hallmarks and began to introduce elements of analogue animation. The soundtrack also deserves a mention, featuring Portuguese-language covers of David Bowie classics. Over time, the film has been reclaimed and has achieved cult status in certain circles.

The Darjeeling Limited followed, in which Jason Schwartzman, Adrien Brody (who would also become a regular in future projects) and Owen Wilson play three brothers travelling by train through India to reconcile with one another and with the memory of their father. The film was released alongside the short Hotel Chevalier, featuring Schwartzman reprising his role, alongside Natalie Portman.

His next project, Fantastic Mr. Fox, was an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s book and marked his first feature-length stop-motion animation, in which he meticulously controlled every aesthetic element. The film was a critical success and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature.

Next came Moonrise Kingdom, which, for many, cemented his status as a major filmmaker. Here, Anderson achieved the aesthetic perfection for which he is known, while paying tribute to the childhood nostalgia mentioned earlier. It remains one of his most iconic, revered and referenced works in popular culture.

Yet it is his next film that, for most (myself included), is his finest: The Grand Budapest Hotel. Starring Ralph Fiennes and featuring an expansive cast that included Anderson’s regular collaborators and many new faces, the film is set in a fictional hotel in interwar Europe. It was a hit with audiences and critics alike, earning nine Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. It ultimately won four awards (the highest number ever for an Anderson film) for Best Original Score, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Production Design and Best Costume Design.

Following the success of The Grand Budapest Hotel, Anderson returned to stop-motion with Isle of Dogs, which was well received, much like Fantastic Mr. Fox before it. The response was more mixed for The French Dispatch, his distinctive homage to The New Yorker magazine. This ensemble piece, set in a French magazine office and structured in chapters, was accused by some detractors of favouring style over substance, a frequent criticism of Anderson’s work.

In 2023, he released his most recent feature film to date (ahead of The Phoenician Scheme), Asteroid City, a delightful piece that simultaneously pays tribute to American theatre, westerns and science fiction, once again featuring his regular cast alongside new faces. Today, Anderson’s projects boast vast, truly star-studded casts, with seemingly all of Hollywood vying to join the director’s exclusive inner circle.

That same year, Anderson also released The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar on Netflix, an anthology of four short films starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Ralph Fiennes, among others, adapting several Roald Dahl stories and once again demonstrating his affection for the writer and the short format.

As we await his latest film, it’s safe to say Wes Anderson is one of the most original filmmakers of his generation. Over the years, he has remained loyal to a distinctive style that he continues to refine, setting himself apart from a cinema landscape dominated by franchises and blockbusters. His films function as perfectly crafted machines in which beauty and melancholy take centre stage, creating an entire universe tailored to the director and his singular troupe. A true delight.

Bastan escasos minutos dentro de cualquiera de las obras de Wes Anderson para detectar estos elementos, que convierten al director en uno de los más reconocibles del panorama actual. Con motivo del estreno de su última película, The Phoenician Scheme, a finales de este mes, repasamos su trayectoria (hoy) y analizaremos las claves de su cine (la semana que viene).

Con 11 películas (12 si contamos la que está a punto de estrenarse) y numerosos cortometrajes a sus espaldas, Wes Anderson desata a su paso reacciones muy polarizadas: pocos espectadores son indiferentes a su obra, acumula legiones de seguidores y de detractores por igual. Lo que es innegable es que se trata de uno de los directores en activo más relevantes, y merece la pena estar al corriente de su proyectos.

Wesley Wales Anderson nació el 1 de Mayo de 1969 en Houston, Texas, donde creció junto a sus dos hermanos. Desde muy joven mostró un creciente interés por el mundo del cine y el teatro, y grababa películas en Super 8 en las que involucraba a sus amigos y hermanos. La nostalgia por este periodo de su vida se verá reflejada constantemente en su obra, en la que vemos una frecuente romantización de los universos infantiles.

Anderson estudió Filosofía en la Universidad de Texas, en Austin, y es ahí donde conoció al que sería uno de los grandes pilares de su carrera: Owen Wilson. Allí forjaron una amistad que dura hasta la fecha, y una de las colaboraciones cinematográficas más largas del panorama actual, ya que Wilson ha formado parte de casi todos los proyectos del director.

Ambos co-escribieron y filmaron el cortometraje Bottle Rocket, que lograrían presentar en el Festival de Sundance de 1993, donde conocerían al legendario director y productor James L. Rushmore relata la amistad entre un adolescente y un hombre mucho mayor que él, y ya presenta los rasgos principales que el director irá depurando a lo largo de su filmografía (y que analizaremos la semana que viene): simetría en la composición de planos, una paleta de colores muy específica (con predominancia de los tonos pastel), personajes melancólicos, outsiders (pero muy distintos a los que veríamos, por ejemplo, en una obra de Tim Burton) y un componente nostálgico.

En 2001 llegaría su primer gran éxito, con The Royal Tenenbaums, donde comienza a depurar sus rasgos de identidad como cineasta, con un reparto plagado de estrellas, entre los que se encuentran sus habituales Bill Murray, Owen y Luke Wilson y caras nuevas en su filmografía como Gene Hackman, Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow o Anjelica Houston (que repetiría en sus siguientes proyectos). Tras The Life Aquatic llegaría Viaje a Darjeeling, en la que Jason Swartzman, Adrien Brody (que también se convertirá en un habitual en sus próximos proyectos) y Owen Wilson interpretan a tres hermanos que viajan en tren a la India para reconciliarse entre ellos y con la memoria de su padre. La cinta se estrenó acompañada del cortometraje Hotel Chevalier, en el que Jason Swartzman interpretaba el mismo papel que en la película, acompañado por Natalie Portman.

Su siguiente proyecto, Fantastic Mr Fox es una adaptación de la obra de Roald Dahl y supone su primer largometraje de animación en stop-motion, en el que controla minuciosamente cada elemento estético. La cinta fue un éxito de crítica y le valió la nominación al Oscar a Mejor Película de Animación.

Lo siguiente sería Moonrise Kingdom, la obra que para muchos lo consolidó como cineasta, en la que alcanza esa excelencia estética que lo caracteriza y homenajea esa faceta de nostalgia infantil que mencionábamos al principio. Sin duda, una de sus obras más icónicas, reverenciadas y homenajeadas en la cultura pop.

Pero es la siguiente la que, para la mayoría (entre los que me incluyo) es su mejor película: El Gran Hotel Budapest. Protagonizada por Ralph Finnes, acompañado por un amplísimo reparto que incluía a los habituales de Anderson y muchas caras nuevas, la película está ambientada en un hotel ficticio en la Europa de entreguerras. La cinta fue un éxito de público y crítica, y obtuvo 9 nominaciones a los Oscar, que incluían Mejor Película, Mejor Director o Mejor Guión original. Finalmente se llevó cuatro estatuillas (el máximo conseguido hasta ahora por una película del cineasta): Mejor Banda Sonora, Mejor Maquillaje y Peluquería, Mejor Diseño de Producción y Mejor Diseño de Vestuario.

Tras el éxito de El Gran Hotel Budapest, Anderson volvió a la animación stop-motion con Isla de Perros, que obtuvo una gran acogida, como ya ocurrió con Fantastic Mr Fox. Más tibia fue la respuesta que obtuvo su particular homenaje a la revista The New Yorker con The French Dispatch, una historia coral, ambientada en la redacción de una revista en Francia, con una estructura dividida en capítulos con la que se le acusó de poner la forma por delante del fondo (un argumento muy habitual entre los detractores del cineasta).

En 2023 estrenó su último largometraje hasta la fecha (pendiente del estreno de The Phoenician Scheme), Asteroid City, una delicia que homenajea al mismo tiempo el teatro americano, el western y el cine de ciencia-ficción, todo ello rodeado de sus habituales y de varias caras nuevas. Los proyectos de Anderson cuentan, a día de hoy, con repartos extensísimos y auténticamente estelares, ya que todo Hollywood parece querer unirse al exclusivo club de amigos del director.

El mismo año el director estrenó en Netflix The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, una antología de cortos que abarca cuatro historias, protagonizadas por Benedict Cumberbatch y Ralph Finnes entre otros, y que adapta varios relatos de Roald Dahl, demostrando una vez más su amor por el escritor y por el formato breve.

A la espera de ver su última obra, podemos afirmar que Wes Anderson es uno de los cineastas más originales de su generación. A lo largo de los años se ha mantenido fiel a un estilo que ha ido puliendo cada vez más (y que analizaremos la semana que viene), desmarcándose de una cartelera dominada por las franquicias y los blockbusters. Sus películas funcionan como perfectas maquinarias en las que la belleza y la melancolía son las protagonistas, creando todo un universo a la medida del director y de su singular troupe. Una verdadera delicia.

Welcome to “spoilerless recommendations”. Now and then, I’ll recommend you a movie that I find essential to watch, but giving you as little information as I can, so I don’t spoil it for you, which means you’ll have to trust my judgement (which, as everyone else’s, sometimes is a good one and sometimes is not).

Sometimes (as is the case today), I feel that the recommendations I make are excessively obvious for any cinephile. But, on the other hand, I can't ignore the fact that for many of you, this may be the first time you're encountering some of these works. And equally, there are films that simply cannot (or should not) be overlooked.

With that said, today’s recommendation is one of those very rare films that I actually enjoy (far) more than the book it’s based on, even though that book is a classic of science fiction literature. I’m talking, of course, about Blade Runner, by Ridley Scott.

What?

Los Angeles, 2019. Humanity has established off-world colonies in search of resources. The all-powerful Tyrell Corporation has designed a race of androids (identical to humans) known as Replicants, to work as slaves in these colonies. Following a mutiny by the Nexus-6 model, Replicants are banned from Earth, where specialised police units known as Blade Runners are tasked with hunting them down.

Rick Deckard is the police officer assigned to track down four rogue Nexus-6 units, led by the dangerous Roy Batty, with the mission to “retire” them.

Who?

Ridley Scott directs the film, which premiered in 1982 and is an adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Harrison Ford leads the cast as police officer Rick Deckard, while Rutger Hauer plays the Replicant Roy Batty. Sean Young, Daryl Hannah, Edward James Olmos and Joanna Cassidy are among the rest of the ensemble.

The soundtrack, composed by Vangelis, plays a vital role in creating the dystopian atmosphere that defines the film.

Why?

Because regardless of whether you’re a fan of science fiction, the atmosphere it conjures through its production design, costumes, and soundtrack is absolutely unforgettable. Because so few film adaptations manage to earn the same (or even greater) critical acclaim as their source material, and this is undeniably one of those cases. Because Rutger Hauer delivers an unforgettable performance as the android Roy Batty. Because it’s a masterpiece, and that should be reason enough. But if it isn’t, then watch it for this scene:

Bienvenidos a “recomendaciones sin spoilers”. De vez en cuando, os recomendaré alguna película que considero imprescindible pero sólo os daré la mínima información posible para no desvelaros nada importante, así que tendréis que fiaros de mi criterio (que, como el de todo el mundo, a veces es bueno y a veces no).

A veces (y hoy es el caso) me parece que hago recomendaciones que resultan excesivamente obvias para cualquier cinéfilo. Pero, por otro lado, no puedo obviar el hecho de que para muchos de vosotros quizás este sea el primer acercamiento a algunas de estas obras. E igualmente hay películas que no se pueden (o no se deberían) pasar por alto.

Dicho esto, la recomendación de hoy es una de esas poquísimas películas que me gusta (mucho) más que el libro en el que está basada, aun siendo éste un clásico de la literatura de ciencia ficción. Se trata, como no podía ser de otra manera, de Blade Runner, de Ridley Scott.

¿Quién?

Ridley Scott dirige la cinta, estrenada en 1982, y que adapta la novela de Philip K. Dick ¿Sueñan los Androides con Ovejas Eléctricas?, publicada en 1968.

Harrison Ford lidera el reparto en el papel del policía Rick Deckard, mientras que Rutger Hauer interpreta al Replicante Roy Batty. Sean Young, Daryl Hannah, Edward James Olmos y Joanna Cassidy completan, entre otros, el reparto.

La banda sonora corre a cargo de Vangelis, y se convierte en un elemento clave para construir el ambiente distópico que caracteriza la película.

¿Por qué?

Porque, independientemente de si os gusta la ciencia ficción, la atmósfera que crea a través de su diseño de producción, vestuario y banda sonora, es absolutamente inolvidable. Porque poquísimas veces las adaptaciones de una novela acaban teniendo el mismo (o mayor) respaldo de la crítica que la obra original, y sin duda es el caso. Porque Rutger Hauer ofrece una interpretación inolvidable como el androide Roy Batty. Porque es una obra maestra, y eso debería ser razón más que suficiente. Pero si no lo fuera, por esta escena:
