Even more book recommendations for the cinephiles out there
Three cinema books to keep you entertained this Summer
To my English speaking readers: since my native language is Spanish, I apologise in advanced for any mistakes that you can find in the English version of this post. Thanks for your support! 😊
I assume you must be wondering “even more book recommendations? Really?” Well, the answer to that question is always going to be yes.
Knowledge is key to understand images. The more we see the more we’ll learn, that’s right, but it is essential that we are also familiar with the codes that help us understand those images. Luckily, we have plenty of resources for that.
These are today’s recommendations:
Movie Mutations: The Changing Face of World Cinephilia (Various Authors). Compiled by Jonathan Rosenbaum and Adrian Martin, this cult classic gathers a series of essays by many film critics and filmmakers about the state and evolution of cinema at the beginning of the 21st century, analysing its changing nature and its adaptability to social and technological changes.
Historia del Cine (Roman Gubern). A tricky recommendation here, as this one is only for Spanish speakers, I believe (I haven’t found any English translation of this book but, if you have, please share it in the comments). If you’re lucky to speak Spanish, this is an absolute classic for all the good reasons. A journey through the history of cinema so thorough that it has been printed, non stop, since it was released for the first time in 1969.
My Last Sigh: The Autobiography of Luis Buñuel (Luis Buñuel). To mix things up a little, I end up today’s recommendations with this Luis Buñuel memoir, in collaboration with Jean-Claude Carrière. This book is the result of their long friendship and their regular interviews, that went along 18 years. In the book Buñuel reflects on life, art and of course, cinema. A true gem.
And that’s it for today. I hope I’m helping you build a good cinema library. Leave some room on the shelves though, there are always more titles coming.
