Spoilerless recommendations: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
My all time favourites with no spoilers at all
To my English speaking readers: since my native language is Spanish, I apologise in advanced for any mistakes that you can find in the English version of this post. Thanks for your support! 😊
Welcome to “spoilerless recommendations”. Now and then, I’ll recommend you a movie that I find essential to watch, but giving you as little information as I can, so I don’t spoil it for you, which means you’ll have to trust my judgement (which, as everyone else’s, sometimes is a good one and sometimes is not).
Today’s recommendation is one of my favourites and, although it didn’t have the huge impact it deserved when it was first released in 2004, it has reached a well deserved cult movie status over time. I’m talking about Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, by Michel Gondry
What?
After ending a failed relationship, Joel Barish and Clementine Kruczynsky decide to try a new medical procedure to erase the memories of their time together.
Through the process, Joel reevaluates the good and the bad moments of his relationship with Clementine.
Not much more can be said, without spoiling anything, about this movie that talks about time and human relationships.
Who?
Michel Gondry directs this movie with a script by Charlie Kaufman, who was in his best moment. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind got the writer, author of Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, a Best Original Screenplay Oscar in 2005.
The movie stars a superb Kate Winslet (who also got an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Clementine) and Jim Carrey, showing an immense talent form drama (that surprised many). They were joined by Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo and Tom Wilkinson.
Why?
Because, if you haven’t seen this movie, you’ll never see something remotely similar. Because the script by Charlie Kaufman is one in a million. Because the cast offers some of their best performances ever. Because the movie is aesthetically outstanding. Because this story, between a romantic drama and science fiction, stays with you forever. Because of scenes like these:
